What is Raised Access Flooring?

Raised access flooring consists of individual floor panels that rest on a precisely adjustable substructure. An installation cavity is created between the raw ceiling and the usable area, in which power lines, data cables, and air conditioning or ventilation technology are safely routed. Each panel can be removed as needed, allowing maintenance and retrofitting without interfering with the building structure.

Compared to a classic cavity floor, raised access flooring is particularly easy to service, as individual elements can be opened without tools. While cavity floors are often used in combination with underfloor heating, raised access flooring demonstrates its strengths in highly technical buildings.

Raised Access Flooring Construction – Technology under Control

  • Floor panels: usually 600 × 600 mm, made of calcium sulfate, wood-based material, steel, or aluminum
  • Substructure: height-adjustable steel supports, optionally with crossbeams for additional stability
  • Surface coverings: applied directly at the factory or installed on-site (carpet, vinyl, HPL, stone, etc.)
  • Installation cavity: height flexible from 100 mm to over 1,500 mm

Raised Access Flooring and Cavity Floor – Differences and Similarities

  • Raised access flooring and cavity floor follow the same basic principle: a usable installation cavity in the floor.
  • Cavity floors and raised access flooring differ, however, in accessibility: With cavity floors, the surface is closed over the entire area, and revisions are carried out via inspection openings. In contrast, raised access flooring can be walked on and opened over the entire surface.
  • Raised access flooring cavity floor combinations are used in projects where different building areas have different requirements – for example, office spaces with raised access flooring and adjacent training areas with cavity floors.

Fire Protection and Safety

Depending on the material and construction, a raised access flooring fire protection system meets high requirements for fire resistance and smoke tightness. Panels made of non-combustible materials (e.g., calcium sulfate, steel) help to safely demarcate fire compartments.
